William "Bill" Arnold, 90 of Iowa City, formerly of Appleton, Wisconsin, died Monday, September 7, 2009 at Mercy Hospital. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Solon United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Meador presiding. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.
Bill was born January 4, 1919 in Iron Mountain, Michigan, the son of Eugene and Katherine (Patrick) Arnold. Bill proudly served as Captain in the United States Army during World War II. He was stationed in Little Rock, Arkansas and was involved in the production of munitions and chemical weapons. He married Marion Ruth Thomas on August 18, 1942 in Pontiac, Michigan. Bill worked as a Chemical Engineer for Kimberly Clark Corp. in Kimberly, Wisconsin for many years until his retirement. Bill enjoyed golf, tennis, swimming, and figure-skated until he was 84 years old. He enjoyed spending time with his family, and traveling, especially to Lake Cumberland in Kentucky and to Tuscon, Arizona.
Bill is survived by his wife, Marion Ruth of Iowa City ; daughters, Karen (Otto) Hatlestad of Schaumburg, Illinois and Jean (Jim) Leighton of Solon; five grandchildren, Greg (Bridget) Hatlestad, Doug (Sherry) Hatlestad, Todd Hatlestad, Heather (Ed) Leighton-Dick, and Spence (Lisa) Leighton; and eight great-grandchildren, Erin, Danny, Brian, Sarah, Jack, Sam, Eva, and Cael.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Earl Arnold.
