Virgil Koss, 89 of 1801 Wilson Avenue SW, died Saturday, April 21, 2007 at Mercy Medical Center. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 24 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids with burial to follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids and for an hour prior to services Tuesday at the Chapel.
Virgil was born January 16, 1918 in Medford, Minnesota the son of Frank and Anna Hudachek Koss. In 1920 the family moved to Cedar Rapids and purchased 100 acres at Seminole Valley where Pioneer Village resides today. He farmed with his family until 1937 and then worked at various jobs in Minnesota and California, returning to Iowa in 1940. Virgil served his country from March 1941 to January 1946. As a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army, his military travels took him to the Hawaiian Islands and the Phillipines.
He returned to the U.S. and started working for the CRANDIC Railroad in February 1946. He met his wife Jean Reijsa on one of the passenger trains and they were married on August 10, 1948 at The Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua. In August 1953 Virgil was hired on as a guard at Rockwell Collins until his retirement in 1982.
Virgil is survived by three sons; Dennis (Liz) of Mackinaw, Illinois, Duane(Diane) of Amana and Gregg (Jackie) of Swisher; three grandchildren Julie Cihla, Kara Krueger, and Jessica Koss; five greatgrandchildren; and one sister Edna Boyd of California.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean who died in 1993, and five sisters Esther Layton, Leona LeBow, Adelaide Yerkes, Marcella Fredrickson, and Eleanor Brown.
