Vernon J. Zach, 91, of Swisher, died peacefully in his home on Thursday, November 27, 2014. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church near Ely, located at 11100 Spanish Road. Private family burial will be in Dupont Cemetery near Swisher. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, November 30, 2014 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Vernon was born April 3, 1923 on the family farm, near Swisher, the son of Joseph and Ella (Bistricky) Zach. He married Martha Dvorak on October 3, 1945 at First Presbyterian Church near Ely. Vernon and Martha farmed near Swisher. Vernon enjoyed hunting, fishing, outdoor activities, playing cards, traveling to Arizona and Texas as well as spending time his family. Vernon is survived by his wife of over sixty-nine years, Martha; sons Larry (Marcia) Zach of Ankeny and Allen Zach of Swisher; four grandchildren Chris Zach, April Zach (Barry Ford), Joshua Zach and Jenna Zach; one great-grandson Beckett Ford; his sister Gladys Mattson of Montana. Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Ernest Zach. Memorials may be directed to the church.
