Velma A. Zakostelecky, 90 of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, March 4, 2008 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy from a brief illness.  Services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 7, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids.   Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time, Thursday at the chapel.
Velma was born July 16, 1917 in rural Solon, the daughter of John and Annie Vanorny Zakostelecky.  She attended a one room school named Cross Road School now part of the Coralville Reservoir and then graduated from Shueyville High School.  Velma received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Iowa and her Master in Social Work from Florida State University.  She taught school at Green Castle School, worked in Social work for the Veterans Administration Hospital when it first opened in 1952, and for Independence Mental Health Institute in the Children's Psychiatric Unit.  Velma enjoyed flowers, bluebirds, glass ware, eating and enjoying the beauty of countryside by car.
Velma is survived by her sisters Anna Hanson of Cedar Rapids and Evelyn Ogle of Bainbridge Island, Washington; a niece Lorri of Bainbridge Island, Washington and a nephew John of Germany.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother John.
