On June 20th, Tom McDonald, age 78, passed away peacefully due to complications from Picks Dementia at the Solon Retirement Village located in Solon, Iowa.

Tom was born on January 10th, 1939, to Freeman and Fern McDonald in Fargo, North Dakota.  Survivors include:  his wife of 31 years Barb McDonald; his brother Jerry McDonald (Judi) and his sister Maureen Lawrence; and children Terry McDonald (Rhonda), Tammy Crist McDonald, Cheryl Maurice, Brian McDonald (Polly) and Mike McDonald (Melanie) along with step sons James Hohn (Melissa) and Joe Hohn (Heather).  He has 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.  He was proceeded in death by his parents, his sisters Kathy Zimmerman (John), Mary Romanchak, and Peggy Weaver (Dave).

Tom was an avid golfer and when he retired he spent quite a bit of time enjoying golf with beloved friends and neighbors before the effects of his dementia made it a challenge for him to continue.

Tom graduated from Shanley High School in Fargo, North Dakota,  in 1957.  He had fond memories of those years and being able to play ball with Roger Maris.  He completed his four year degree at North Dakota State University and went on to obtain his Master's Degree at Moorhead State.  He started his work career at McDonald Livestock and McDonald Meats in Fargo, North Dakota, and ended his career working as Sales Manager for Ecosyl Products (a feed inoculant company from the UK).  When Tommy wasn't employed in the Ag industry, he taught Marketing at Mankato Technical College in Minnesota.  Tom also served as a member of the North Dakota State Legislature and as West Fargo North Dakota Police Commissioner.

Celebration of Life Gathering will be held on July 15th, 2017 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre, located at 100 South Cedar Street in Solon, where there will be a 1:00 p.m. Prayer Service.

Tom will be greatly missed by his family.  In lieu of flowers, etc., memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer Association or Iowa City Hospice.
