Shirley Fae Boyce, 87, of Cedar Rapids, died Sunday, December 7, 2008 at Methwick Retirement Community.  Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Sunday, December 14, 2008 at People's Church Unitarian Universalist.  Inurnment will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Solon.  Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements.
Shirley was born January 10, 1921 in Mt. Vernon, the daughter of Arlo and Laura (Goudy) Sanderson.  She married John Boyce in September of 1944.  Shirley worked as an editor at Buildings Magazine for Stamats Publishing Company for over 22 years.  She then worked as a publicist at the University of Iowa Press for 10 years until her retirement.  She was an active volunteer at the Solon Elementary School, the Solon Community Library, and Woodlands at Methwick.  She was a member of the United Nations Association, and the People's Church Unitarian Universalist.  Shirley loved to read, cook and fish, not necessarily in that order.  Witty and literate, Shirley turned an elegant phrase and an equally brilliant pun.
Shirley is survived by her children, Brooke Boyce Thompson of Bainbridge Island, Washington and Kurth Boyce of Coralville; grandchildren, Joshua Boyce, Cameron Boyce, Danan Thompson, and Bryn (David) Lashmet; great-grandchildren, Sabrina and Lily Lashmet; brothers, Donald Sanderson of Torrey, Utah, and Ric Sanderson of Mililani, Hawaii; and a special friend, Tom Moss of Cedar Rapids.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband John on October 19, 1992; and her brother, Bob Sanderson.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Mercy Hospital.
