Ruby Louan (Cochran) Jedlicka, 84, of Solon, passed away on Sunday, September 5, 2021, at the Solon Retirement Village.  Celebration of Life Services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 11, 2021, at the Solon United Methodist Church with burial to follow in Oakland Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until service time Saturday, September 11, 2021, at the church. Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Solon is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby was born March 9, 1937, in Oxford, IA, the daughter of Fred and Mildred (Ross) Cochran. She attended several one room schools in Johnson County and graduated from Solon High School in 1955 and St. Luke's School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids as a registered nurse in 1958. That same year she married Bob Jedlicka at the Shueyville United Methodist Church. Soon after, he was stationed with the U.S. Army in Germany, where she joined him and worked at the 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt. Upon returning home to Solon two years later, she worked briefly at St Luke's, later in the emergency department at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City and spent most of her career with Surgical Services in Iowa City where she retired in 2002.

A committed supporter of Solon, she often spearheaded projects for older adults. She was a member of the founding committee of the Solon Retirement Village and served on its board of directors for 40 years. Coincidentally, she played a large part in establishing the addition of a memory care neighborhood not long before she learned of her own dementia diagnosis. She was also part of the development of the Solon Senior Community Housing project. Ruby was a long-time member of the Solon United Methodist Church, the Solon Women's Club, the Solon Sesquicentennial Committee, the Solon All School Reunion, Trees Forever, and many other Solon efforts.

We will remember her as a very busy working mom that always found time for her family. Ruby charged through every day, flipping from work to family to community.  She also found time for friends, extended family, baking for Bob, plus squeezing in vacations and activities for her "Seven Little Stinkers" grandchildren. She was seldom discouraged, had a strong faith, and found purpose in helping people and improving her town. Even though she could not show it, she was immensely grateful for the hardworking nurses and nursing assistants in Memory Care at the Solon Retirement Village that provided her with quality of life during her long stay.

Ruby is survived by her three children, Renee Jedlicka (Tony Stubbs) of Dubuque and their two children, Jacob and Maddie; Roxane (Miles) Patton of Sioux City, and their two children, Jessie (Forrest) Williams and Miles; and a son, Rick (Terri) Jedlicka of Solon and their three children, Rob, Charlie, and Jeannie. She is also survived by her sister, Dorothy Sahr of Santiago, Chile, and five sisters-in-law, Jean Cochran of Iowa City, Evelyn Langlas of Williamsburg, Irene Wears of Solon, Shirley (Jerry) McAtee of Solon, and Kathleen (Richard) Beuter of Carmel, Indiana and so many remarkable nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her infant sister Rachel, her brothers Charles and Dale, and her husband Bob.

Ruby's family wants to extend deep gratitude to the entire staff of the Solon Retirement Village for their outstanding care of our mom.  Memorial contributions may be given to the Solon Retirement Village Foundation for Memory Care, the Solon United Methodist Church, or the charity of your choice.
