Ronald James Wilwol, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, veteran, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by love. Friends may visit with the family from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, November 21, 2025, at the Swisher American Legion Post #671 where a Celebration of Life Service will be held at 6 p.m.  Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre are assisting the family at this time

Born on May 8, 1948, in Bennington, Vermont, to James and Muriel Wilwol, Ron lived a life defined by integrity, service, and steadfast devotion—to his country, his community, and above all, his family. Ron proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four honorable years. His sense of duty didn't end with his military service—it became the foundation for everything he did in life. Following his time in the Air Force, Ron continued his commitment to leadership and service through the American Legion, where he rose through the ranks from Commander of Swisher Post 671 to County Commander, District Commander, and ultimately to serve at the state level as part of the Detachment of Iowa. His leadership, fairness, and compassion left a lasting mark on all who served beside him. Outside of his service to others, Ron built a long and respected career as an electrician and proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW). His strong work ethic, attention to detail, and pride in craftsmanship reflected the same sense of honor he carried in every area of his life. Whether wiring a project or mentoring others, Ron's steady hand and calm approach earned him respect across the trade.

Beyond his titles and accomplishments, Ron's most important role was within his family. He was our provider, our teacher, and the unshakable foundation we leaned on. His strength, structure, and wisdom guided us all, helping shape his children into the strong and compassionate people we are today. Of course, it wasn't always easy growing up with a dad as strong-willed as Ron—he was known to be a bit hard-headed and famously had the "final say." But those traits, paired with his fairness and humor, are now the same ones we proudly carry forward. Ron loved the outdoors—bow hunting, golfing, and being part of his Swisher community—but his greatest joy was being on the water. Summers meant boating adventures with family and friends, where he earned the affectionate nickname "Captain Ron." His pride and joy, the Cutty Shark, became a second home for so many unforgettable weekends filled with laughter, sunshine, and stories that still bring smiles today. When Parkinson's made it too difficult to continue, he reluctantly gave up his captain's post, but those cherished memories remained forever anchored in our hearts.

In June of 1993, Ron married the love of his life, Sheryl, aboard the Cutty Shark, where they "took the plunge" and began their life together. Their marriage was one of devotion and true partnership. Sheryl was not only Ron's wife but his soulmate, best friend, caregiver, and constant companion. She embodied the very meaning of the vow "to love and cherish through sickness and in health." Her selflessness and strength were unmatched—she gave every ounce of her heart to ensuring Ron's comfort and happiness. If the word "strong" were pictured in the dictionary, it would bear her photo. For ten wonderful years, Ron and Sheryl escaped the Iowa winters to become snowbirds in Arizona, where they built lifelong friendships and spent their days soaking up the desert sun. Ron's gentle, soft-spoken nature was balanced by his quick wit and sense of humor. Even in his most difficult moments, his laughter and lighthearted jokes brought smiles to everyone around him—especially during his time at the VA Care Center in Marshalltown, Iowa. To the compassionate men and women of the VA Care Center, our family extends our deepest gratitude. Your kindness, patience, and care gave Ron not just more time, but better time. We are forever thankful for the dignity and joy you brought into his days.

Ron is survived by his devoted wife, Sheryl Wilwol; his siblings, Connie (Ron) Dawley and Jason Wilwol; many nieces and nephews; his children, Mike Wilwol, Julie Coleson, Lori (Brian) Kramer, Shawn Lurkens, and Dustin (Megan) Carson; as well as his loyal four-legged companion, Coco. He is also survived by his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, each of whom brought immense pride and joy into his life. Though he has now set sail on his final voyage, the legacy of Captain Ron lives on—in the lessons he taught, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave so freely. His spirit will forever guide us, steady as the current and warm as the sun on the water. "Fair winds and following seas, Captain. We'll see you again on the horizon."

Ron is preceded in death by his parents, grandson Hunter, and Gizmo.
