Dr. Ronald George Matias, 79, of Cedar Rapids, passed away on Wednesday, February 11, 2026, in his home. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m., Friday, February 20, 2026, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, with a Memorial Latin Mass at 10:30 a.m. Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre are assisting the family at this time.
Ronald was born on January 9, 1947, in Cedar Rapids, the son of George and Mary Kathleen "Connie" (Convey) Matias. At just 14 years old, Ron began losing his sight. After several unsuccessful surgeries, Ron was declared legally blind at age 16. With the assistance of a tutor, teachers, fellow students and younger sister Mary Kay, Ron graduated from Washington High School in 1966. He went on to earn an undergraduate degree from Iowa State University, as well as a Master's degree from Miami University at Ohio. and Doctorate in Psychology from The University of Iowa.
After graduating from Iowa, Ron worked in the University's Counseling Department, where he provided guidance and support to students. Later, Ron taught psychology at Indiana State University. He gave up his teaching position to devote nearly all his time to the presidency of the National Federation of the Blind of Indiana. Ron eventually transitioned into managing vending services for the Indiana State Correctional System, alongside his wife, Barbara.
Ron was a very intelligent, friendly and humble man. He was also an avid listener with a wonderful sense of humor and contagious laugh. Ron enjoyed reading and remained a lifelong learner, always staying up to date on current events, sports, politics, etc. He could talk to anyone at any level on any subject.
Ron is survived by his daughter Amy (Ritch) Kahler; son Dr. Charles Matias; his brother John (Barb) Matias; his sister-in-law Lisa Matias; his granddaughter Andie Farr; former wife and friend, Marlene Matias, as well as several cousins, nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his infant son Andrew John, his wife Barbara (Yeary) Matias, his sister Mary Kay (Lynn) Willett and brother Mark Matias.
