Robert Roy Werner, 90 of Solon died Saturday, February 23 at his home from a brief illness. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 27, at the Solon United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Meador presiding. Full military rites will be conducted by the Solon American Legion Stinocher Post 460. Burial to follow in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
Robert was born June 23, 1917 in Winfield, the son of Benelius F. and Margaret Maye McCullough Werner. Robert was raised on the family farm with his brothers and sisters. He served in the U.S. Navy with the 6
th
Seabees in the Pacific Islands during World War II. On December 19, 1945 he married Bernice Burmeister in Iowa City. Roy worked as a crane operator and built many highway bridges in Iowa, the last one being the City Park Bridge in Iowa City. In 1961, he built the first permanent house in Twin View Heights. He worked at Penick & Ford for fourteen years and retired from Midland Forge. He enjoyed working on his brother in laws farms, building projects, hunting pheasants with his sons, floating on Lake McBride with his family and wintering in Yuma, Arizona the last twelve years.
Robert is survived by his wife of over 62 years Bernice, sons Thomas Robert Werner of Solon and Scott Roy Werner of Stillwater, Minnesota; three grandchildren Laura (Chris) Powers of Akeley, Minnesota, Shane Werner of Rockford, Illinois, and Rebecca Werner of Akeley, Minnesota; and a greatgranddaughter Miranda Powers of Akeley, Minnesota. Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers and seven sisters.
