Robert William Novotny, 84 passed away peacefully on July 24, 2016 at UIHC after a brief illness.  At his request, he was cremated and will be interned at a later date at the Shueyville Cemetery, near his parents.  Services will be held Friday, August 5th at the Shueyville Methodist Church at 10:30 a.m. followed by a time of fellowship.

Bob was born December 6, 1931 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, to Grace (Bowersox) and Fred Novotny. He lived his life in Shueyville graduating with the class of 1950 from Shueyville High School and enjoyed attending the yearly reunions with his classmates and the graduates from each year.  He enjoyed reminiscing about events in his youth and beyond.  He proudly served in the United States Army and was on active duty from 1952-54 and finished out his eight years in the military with the last six years in the reserves.  He had a plumbing/ well drilling apprenticeship in Kansas City and joined his father in Novotny and Sons Well Drilling and Plumbing business. He loved his trade and drilled wells for numerous homes in Shueyville and the surrounding areas.  Bob had an excellent memory and could recall names, and events from years back. He was our local historian. He also enjoyed Big Band Music (Real Music!) and in his younger years, attending dances.   Bob had a real knack for connecting with people of all ages. He could spark a conversation with the young and the old. Bob enjoyed golf, Hawkeye football and basketball and frequent dining out with his many friends as well as daily "coffee hour" with his neighbors. Friends calling or stopping by to visit also brightened his days.

He was preceded in death by his parents, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Bob is survived by his Aunt Helen Whiting of Waunakee, Wisconsin and several cousins.  His many close friends will miss his stories and time spent together.

Memorials if desired, may be sent to the Shueyville United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.
