Robert "Bob" Alfred Burns, 75, of Fairfax, passed away peacefully, Friday, November 22, 2024, in his home, surrounded by family with his beautiful wife in his arms. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW, where there will be a rosary at 3:30 and vigil/sharing service at 7:30 p.m.  Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 27, 2024, at St. John XXIII Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery with luncheon to follow at the church.

Robert was born February 13, 1949, in Clinton, the son of Patrick and Grace (Brown) Burns. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Clinton.  Bob was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Susie Hickenbottom on August 17, 1968, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Clinton. Bob's love for Susie was immeasurable and the life they shared was the envy of everyone they encountered.

Bob worked hard at many jobs before settling in for his career at Prudential Insurance as a salesman and manager.  He enjoyed reading, fishing, golfing, going to movies, playing cards/games, being active in the church and attending daily Mass. He loved going to baseball games and wrestling meets and attended as many of his children's/grandchildren's activities as possible. He spent numerous years coaching softball and baseball which created many lifelong friendships. Most of all, Bob loved spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren.

Bob's most important role was being the spiritual leader of his family. He is survived by his wife Susie; his children Carole (Dean) Martin, Traci (Steve) Walters, Robin (Sean) Poston, Marcus (Megan) Burns and Ryan (Amy) Burns; seventeen grandchildren, Erin (Jon), Justin (Abby), Jordan (Karlie), Jacob (Maria), Kaitlyn (Matthew), Noelle (Christian), Sabrina (Jimmy), Marcus (Claire), Lance, Raelynne (Jake), Garett, Payton, Maxton, Macey, Elizabeth, Marie and Maddy; seventeen great-grandchildren Marcus, Gabriel, Grace, Ellen, Olivia, Josephine, Oliver, Milo, Jett, Beau, Juliette, Fulton, Aurelia, Lucia, Willow, Kasen, and one on the way; his siblings Mick (Monica) Burns, Ruthann Notz, Donna (Joe) Nielson, Tom (Mary Ann) Burns, Mary (George) Ivory, Joe (Terri) Burns and Tim (Kelly) Burns; his sisters-in-law Sandy Lara, Sally Smith, Sheila McMinimy and Sheri (Keith) Sorem; as well as his many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Kathy Burns and Sr. Michael Marie "Judy" Burns, his stepfather Ray Leonard, his brothers-in-law Karl Notz and Bob Lara, sister-in-law Shirley (Jerry) Enwright, as well as his mother and father-in-law Betty and Darrell Hickenbottom.

Memorials may be directed to St. John XXIII Building Fund in his name.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the many caregivers at St. Luke's Hospital "Unity Point" for their loving care of Bob.
