Paul George Fiala (August 10, 1945 – March 20, 2026) passed away suddenly at St. Luke's Hospital following a brief illness, surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2026, at Brosh Chapel and Avacentre, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Celebration Of Life Gathering will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 26, 2026, at Brosh Chapel. Inurnment will be held at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Solon.

Paul was born in Davenport, Iowa to George Ralph Fiala and Florence Elsie Fiala. He grew up in Solon where the broader Fiala family helped establish the town in 1840's. Paul graduated from Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids in 1963, the fourth class to graduate from the newly established PHS. An active student, he participated in debate, theater & forensics, wrestling, PHS Student Council and served as senior class president. Following High School, he attended the University of Iowa, studying economics and competing in intercollegiate debate, before enlisting in the U.S. Army. Paul served four years, including assignments in Baumholder, Germany and Quy Nhon, Vietnam. After his time in the US Army, Paul returned to the University of Iowa and completed his BS in Economics.  In 1967 his first son, John Paul Fiala was born in Iowa city to his first wife, Sharon Scinta.

Paul worked as a stockbroker and options trader with Merrill Lynch and EF Hutton in St Louis, and Stifel Nicolaus, and A.G. Edwards in Iowa. In 1977 he fell in love.  He married his second wife, Kathy Gregory in 1983.  Together they raised their four sons – Jason, Austen, Bryan, and Nathan - in Swisher, Iowa. Paul was an enthusiastic father who actively participated in scouting, music events, sports, cooking, and family traditions.  He especially enjoyed making birthday cakes with coffee flavored icing for his children.

Throughout his life, Paul was an avid card player, and an enthusiastic reader of European and American History, a passion he passed along to his sons. Paul enjoyed his hometown of Swisher, especially the monthly Kava House coffee meetings with his PHS Class of '63 Classmates.  He was a member of the American Legion of Fairfax, and was a "ExOfficio member" of the Black Squirrel Club in Swisher.  He cherished his good friends and family.

Paul is predeceased by his Parents, George and Florence Fiala, his oldest brother, David Fiala, and sister-in-law, Karen Clark Fiala; his 1st wife Sharon Scinta Fiala and his oldest son, John Paul Fiala. He is also predeceased by Kirk and Rosemarie Gregory, his Texas in-laws. and his Brother-in-Law, Dr. Gary Brotze of New Braunfels, Texas.

Paul is survived by his large family, including his wife, Kathy Gregory-Fiala, his sons Jason (Mary), Austen (Amanda), Bryan (Maggie), Nathan (Katie), and his 10 grandchildren, including Gabrielle and Tyler Fiala, Faith Schunter, Esme and Elijah Fiala, Madison, Vivian and Allison Fiala;  Bryson and Emily Fiala.  Survivors also include his brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Mary Fiala of Cedar Rapids, his Texas Sister-in-Law, Terri Gregory Brotze and his many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He loved and was proud of every one of them.
