Michael Louis Kast, age 79, passed away on Sept. 13, 2026, from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease. 

Born in Chicago on July 17, 1947, to Leslie F. and Grace Kast, Mike spent his childhood in Lombard, Ill., before attending college at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He joined the Navy in 1971, and moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he lived until 2024, when he relocated to Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Mike will be remembered for his kindness and generosity, his devotion to his family, and his love of food and animals, especially his bassett hounds. 

He was preceeded in death by his sister, Barbara Reading, and his brother, Raymond (Linda). 

He is survived by his nephews, Thomas Reading (Michelle), Kelly Kast (Maria), and Nathan Kast, his nieces (goddaughters) Kris Harast (Tracy), and Elizabeth Hippensteel (Seth), and his friend, Anthony Jones. His family is grateful for the kindness and support shown during this time.
