Maxine Virginia Nemer, 91 of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, August 28, 2013 at her home. Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 31, 2013 at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, located at 3650 Cottage Grove Avenue SE, with Fr. Fred Shaheen presiding. Burial will follow in St. George Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, where there will be a 7 p.m. Trisagion. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements. Maxine was born May 21, 1922 in Walker, the daughter of Charles A. and Lillian (Alberts) Kacere. She graduated from McKinley High School in Cedar Rapids. In her early years, she worked along side her father at Kacere's Food Market, while her brothers served in World War II. Maxine married Nicolas T. Nemer on August 28, 1955 at St. George Church. Maxine and Nicolas owned and operated Nemer's 3rd Avenue Coffee Bar. She was an avid Hawkeye and Cub fan. Maxine enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandson Benjamin. She was a lifelong member of St. George Church and the Ladies Auxillary. Maxine is survived by her daughter Jean (Walter) Maher and Jane Nemer; grandson Benjamin (Sarah) Maher all of Cedar Rapids; sisters-in-law Mary Jean Kacere of West Des Moines and Elizabeth Kacere of Cedar Rapids; and her numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Nicolas, her brothers Abe, George, Robert, and John Kacere, sisters Delia Laham, Fannie Haddy, and Helen Wehby. Memorials may be directed to either St. George Cemetery Fund and or Hospice of Mercy in her name.
