Maxine Houser, 96, of Cedar Rapids, died Friday, March 25, 2016 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House of Mercy. Celebration of life services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 28, 2016 at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Private family inurnment will be held in Czech National Cemetery.
Maxine was born March 14, 1920 near Fairfax, IA the daughter of Benjamin and Helen (Schlueter) Houser. She graduated from Cedar Rapids Wilson High School in 1937. Following she attended the Moline Institute of Commerce business school, where she later taught for several years. Maxine worked for several businesses and her most cherished memories were working for Ira McGladrey in Cedar Rapids. Maxine was united in marriage to Robert D. Agnew in 1942. During his Army Air Corps career during World War II, she worked at the bases where he was stationed. She was a very hardworking, warm, outgoing, dedicated, independent daughter, mother of two, grandmother of four and will be greatly missed. She loved people, baking kolaches, card parties, traveling the world with daughter Linda, and visiting daughter Debbie in the U.S. and Spain, spending time with family and friends, gardening and. of course, her little brown house on 23rd Street Drive (her dad's home, in the family since 1952). Maxine was very proud of her Czech heritage and traveled to Czech Republic several times to visit relatives.
Maxine is survived by her children Debbie Snider and Linda (Mark) Beckett, both of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren Scott (Valerie) Bradshaw, Stephanie Bradshaw and Chelsea Lee; four great-grandchildren Kylee, Taryn, Wolf and Xochiti; and special family members, Larry Beckett and Jongsun Kim.
Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, her granddaughter Katie Beckett, and her former husband Robert Agnew.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to her family and friends, including Rosemary Smith Family and Fae Pettet, for their loving care and support for Maxine.
