Mary Elizabeth Velky, 78 of Solon, died Thursday, February 13, 2014 at the Dennis and Donna Oldorf Hospice House. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 17, 2014 at Brosh Chapel in Solon, located at 100 South Cedar Street, with burial to follow in Sulek Cemetery near Shueyville. Visitation will be from 2 -5 p.m. Sunday at Brosh Chapel. Mary was born May 9, 1935 in Shabbona, Illinois, the daughter of Floyd and Gladys Buchanan. She graduated from Waterman Community High School in Waterman, Illinois. She was united in marriage to Emil Thomas Velky Sr. on November 3, 1956 in Shabbona, Illinois. Mary and Emil farmed near Ainsworth until moving to Ely, continuing farming and operating the trucking company. Mary worked at the Powers Truck Port in Cedar Rapids, Double C in Ely, Country Café in Solon, and for the College Community School District as a cook until her retirement. She enjoyed going to auctions and sales, traveling, going to the casino, sitting on the porch and watching the outdoors, and spending time with her family. Mary was very involved in Velky and Sons Trucking, as well as the Solon American Legion Auxillary and had served as President of the 1st District. Mary is survived by her husband Emil of over 57 years, her children Emil Velky Jr. (Dona Wensel) of Cedar Rapids, Gloria (Pat) Malatek of Ely, Cheryl Velky of Brandon, Charlie (Julie) Velky of Cedar Rapids, Brian (Karrie) Velky of Ely and Tanya Velky (Chris McAfee) of Cedar Rapids; eleven grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents Floyd and Gladys Buchanan, a daughter Donna Marie Velky-Clark, and her brother Charles Buchanan. Memorials may be directed to the family.
