Marion Ruth Arnold, 91, died Saturday, December 10, 2011 at Bickford Cottage in Iowa City. A memorial service will be 10:00 a.m., December 30th, 2011 at the Solon United Methodist Church, with Reverend Carol Kress presiding. Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements. Ruth was born June 4, 1920 in Rosston, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Olfrey and Merle Alice (Bittinger) Heilman. She graduated from Pontiac Sr. High School in 1938 and Michigan State University in 1941. Ruth married Wm. E. Arnold on August 18, 1942 in Pontiac, Michigan and went with him to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, where he was stationed during WWII. In 1949 they moved to Appleton, Wisconsin, living there until 2009. In 1950 Ruth joined the American Association of University Women, serving as president from 1960-62 and having a graduate fellowship named for her. Ruth was also a community volunteer, serving on the board of Visiting Nurses Association, on the budget committee of United Community Services (1962), and on the Citizen's Advisory and Improvement Committee (1970). Ruth was a long-term member (1949) of the First United Methodist Church of Appleton and was active for many years in their Women's Society of Christian Service. Ruth is survived by two daughters, Karen (Otto) Hatlestad of Schaumburg, Illinois and Jean (Jim) Leighton of Solon, Iowa; five grandchildren, Greg (Bridget) Hatlestad, Doug (Sherry) Hatlestad, Todd Hatlestad, Heather (Ed) Leighton-Dick and Spence (Lisa) Leighton; and ten great-grandchildren, Erin, Danny, Brian, Sarah, Jack, Sam, Eva, Hannah, Cael and Drake. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Bill. Memorials may be directed to the family.
