Madaline Margaret Murphy, 89, of Fairfax died Friday evening, March 17, 2006 at the Mercy Hallmar Center following a long illness.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, March 21, 2006 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fairfax with Father Phil Thompson, presiding. Interment will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery, Fairfax. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 pm on Monday at Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids where a Catholic Order of Foresters Rosary will begin at 5 pm and a vigil service at 7 pm.
Madaline was born on August 5, 1916 in Kinross, Iowa, the daughter of Bernard and Anna (Doyle) Monaghan. She married John E. Murphy on June 3, 1940 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. She was a graduate of Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids. While working at Cedar Rapids Pump and Supply she met her husband John. After their marriage they worked together at John's business, John Murphy Plumbing and Heating. She was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and of the Altar and Rosary Society. In addition Madaline was involved with Catholic Order of Foresters Court 769. She served as Fairfax Township Clerk and was on the St. Patrick Cemetery Board of Trustees.
Survivors include her children Kathleen Murphy of South Bend, Indiana, Lois (Jerry) Rayman of Cedar Rapids, Donny (Maureen) Murphy of Cedar Rapids, and John (Chris) Murphy of Keokuk; grandchildren Bill Neff, Ann Ross, Jody O'Neill, Jill Maybanks, Tracy Murphy, Sean Murphy, and Matthew Murphy; great-grandchildren Alexis and Kristin Neff, Kaylee and Emilee Ross, and Evelyn and Owen O'Neill; six step grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; a sister Mary Regina (Earl) Lorenzen of Cedar Rapids; a brother Charles Monaghan of Cedar Rapids, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John in 1988, brothers Leo, Leonard "Red", and John Francis Monaghan, and a sister Geraldine Passino.
She was a kind, gracious, and independent woman whose main focus was her faith and her family. Death ends a life, but not a family
