Mabel Luella (Burge) Simon, 92 of Des Moines, formerly of Ely, died Wednesday, November 21, 2007 at Fleur Heights Care Center in Des Moines. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at First Presbyterian Church near Ely. Burial will follow in First Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Visitation will be an hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.
Mabel was born August 28, 1915 the daughter of Roy Elmer Burge and Clara Bell (Whitman) Burge, south of Mt Vernon, Iowa, where she attended Standing Rock School, and graduated from Lisbon High School in 1932. Her education and work included Iowa State Telephone in Lisbon, attending Paris Academy of Cosmetology in Cedar Rapids, and the Waves in WW#2. On November 26, 1953 she married Justus William Simon at the First Presbyterian Church near Ely, Iowa, and spent many years as a farmwife, and cook at Prairie Intermediate School.
More recently she was a resident at Elsie Mason Manor in Des Moines, Iowa where she had many cherished friends. Mabel's community service and clubs were being a Deacon, a member of the Johanna Society of Ely, Presbyterian Women, the Rebekah Lodge of Ely, and the College Circle Club. Mabel's interests included gardening, sewing, baking, love of music, and bible study.
Mabel is survived by her brother Ralph Burge, her son Joseph Roy Simon and Daughter-in-law Becky Simon, of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her husband Justus, and sisters Hilda Minor, and Maxine Walton.
