Lynn Lee
Macvey
January 26, 1960 – April 27, 2023
ACES AND EIGHTS
Lynn Lee MacVey made the ultimate journey to party forever with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 27, 2023 after a brief illness.
Lynn was born a simple man, the only son of Brownie Lee MacVey, born January 26, 1960 in Fort Dodge, Iowa. Lynn grew up on the family farm near Rolfe, Iowa. Although his father had modern farm equipment, they also farmed with Percheron horses, continuing the legacy of his grandfather who, in 1898, returned to Iowa from Louisiana with Percheron horses.
Lynn embraced the family love of horses at an early age. At two years old, he received his first pony. He bought his first Percheron at age fifteen, becoming the first member of his family to own a registered Percheron.
After graduating from Rolfe High School in 1978, Lynn attended Iowa State University, receiving his Bachelor's of Science in Agriculture Education in May, 1983. After student teaching in Esterville, Iowa, he landed his first teaching position, starting the very first Ag FFA program at Havelock-Plover High School in Havelock, Iowa. He later taught Ag Education and was an FFA advisor at high schools in Walnut, Alburnett, and Algona, Iowa. With each new position he experienced growing class sizes and responsibilities.
Lynn received his Master's of Education from Southwest Minnesota State University in 2005. For over twenty years Lynn was dedicated to sharing his passion for farming and the importance of agriculture with his students. Lynn made a lasting impact on everyone he met, maintaining close friendships with many of his former students whom he mentored through the years, right up until his death.
Lynn met and married the love of his life Janine (Brindle-Lawler) MacVey on May 31, 2003. Although he chose a woman that didn't know the head of a horse from the tail, he quickly instilled his love of the Percheron horse on his bride. What better teacher than a man who had raised the World Champion Stallion, Pleasant View King. Lynn was a true Percheron breeder, always looking for that next outstanding cross.
After moving to Ohio in 2013, he got into the Morgan business with some Amish neighbors, purchasing an interest in a top end Morgan stallion, KJM Soul Commander. With the expertise and assistance of his Amish friends, he acquired an exceptional band of Morgan brood mares, resulting in a very successful breeding operation, yielding top quality Morgan buggy horses which bear the Yellowstone name. One of Lynn's last purchases was a Morgan show mare by the name of Drakaina, assuring Lynn's breeding legacy will live on in the Morgan world.
Lynn forged many lifelong relationships with heavy horse lovers around the world. He worked for the Draft Horse Journal. He was a lifetime member of the Percheron Horse Association of America, serving on the Board of Directors for over twenty years. He was a member of the Iowa Draft Horse and Mule Association, serving in various positions over the years. He loved getting together with his Iowa friends, judging horse plowing matches and working horse events. Lynn loved heavy horses, instilling the idea that you don't have to spend a lot a money to have fun with a single horse.
Lynn maintained an incredible sense of humor throughout his life, with deep love and appreciation for the Western United States. He provided opportunity for countless kids to explore our beautiful country through Ag Expeditions to one of his favorite places in the world, Yellowstone National Park, as well as prairie dog hunts in South Dakota, and countless FFA competitions throughout Iowa and surrounding states.
Left to tend to the horses he leaves behind is his loving wife of twenty years, Janine, their Toy Aussies; Queen Lagertha Louise, Queen Astrid Jaime, and King Ragnar The Greatest, as well as his step-children, Zachary Lawler of Conrad, Thaddeus Lawler of Conrad, James Lawler of Ames, and Hannah Lawler of Algona. He also leaves behind his best friend and only brother.
For a man with no biological children, he leaves behind a number of kids, on whom he had a profound impact. Most of his kids proudly wore the blue jacket of the FFA. He also acquired as some extra special IBS's and IBD's.
Visitation will be from 1:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday, April 30, 2023 at the Wolf Ranch in Marshalltown, Iowa. Lynn's Celebration Of A Life Well Lived will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Union, Iowa on Monday, May 1, 2023 at 10:30 AM. Preferred attire is bib overalls. He will take his last ride to the Union Cemetery with horses of his Percheron breeding, Pleasant View Rose and Bud. A luncheon will follow at the church. Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids is serving the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family is teaming up with the Percheron Horse Association Of America Education And Charitable Fund to create a Legacy Agricultural Scholarship for a student that is/was an FFA member and has a Percheron interest/background. To make a contribution in memory of Lynn make your check payable to PHAoA Education & CharitableFund, c/o Jim Whitford, 7675 Welling Road, St Johns, MI 48879.
"Well, it's been a hell of a ride for the last 63 years. But I guess it is time to head on down the road and cross that river to the next chapter of my life. Those who I love know and the rest can go to hell," Lynn MacVey
