Lumir George Zahradnik, 81, of Ely died Wednesday night, October 19, 2005 at St. Luke's Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, October 24, 2005 at the First Presbyterian Church near Ely with Reverend Bob David, officiating. Interment will follow at Rogers Grove Cemetery near Ely. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm on Sunday at Brosh Chapel, Cedar Rapids where the will be a 6 pm Oddfellows service. and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
Lumir was born on November 7, 1923 in Ely the son of Joseph and Frances (Nemecek) Zahradnik. He married Viola Faltis on September 22, 1948 at Hus Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids. Lumir farmed for many years in the Ely area. He was a lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church near Ely where he served as an Elder, Sunday School Superintendent, and chairman of the Property Management Committee. Lumir was also a member of First Presbyterian Church of Sun City where he was a member of the Men's Breakfast Club. In addition to his church memberships he was a longtime member of Ely Oddfellows Lodge #581 for sixty-one years where he served as Noble Grand Officer for many years. Lumir was a 50-year member of Ely Rebkah Lodge #56, a member of Linn County Farm Bureau where he served on the membership committee several times. He was chairman of Putman Township Trustees, a member of College Community Band Parents, Linn County Better Crops, and the Ely Town and Country Club.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years Viola Zahradnik of Ely; daughter Linda (Dave) Kvapil of Littleton, Colorado; sons Ron (Sandi) Zahradnik of Ely and Larry Zahradnik of Fallbrook, California; grandchildren Gayla Flesher, Jared Kvapil, Gloria Zahradnik, Ryan Zahradnik, Brandon Zahradnik, and Daniel Zahradnik; great-grandson Jordan Flesher; brother Milo Zahradnik of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.
Lumir was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Frank J. and William A. Zahradnik, sisters Agnes Smith, and Martha Chalaupka.
A memorial fund has been established for the First Presbyterian Church near Ely.
