Louis Colbert, 76, of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, April 1, 2019, at Manor Care. Homegoing Services will be 3 p.m. Friday, April 5, 2019, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW, where full military rites will be conducted by the Iowa Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 2:30 p.m. until service time Friday. Interment will be in Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter.
Louis Charles Colbert, Jr. was born on August 27, 1942 to Reverend Louis Charles and Betty Mae Colbert, both preceded him in death. He was born in Rock Island, Illinois and departed this life early in the morning of April 1, 2019 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, prior to spending the weekend surrounded by his loving family.
Louis attended elementary and high school in Cedar Rapids, and after graduation, joined the Army and was stationed in South Korea. After his military service, Louis spent time in California prior to returning to Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Louis loved fishing, sports, oil and water painting, playing games on the computer and social media. When he wasn't enjoying time with his family and grandchildren, he took great joy in telling friends, family and strangers of his many travel and service-related experiences.
Louis leaves to cherish his memories, his sister and caretaker, Betty(Rufus)Johnson of Marion, Iowa; his sister Bernice Downs of Chicago, Illinois, and his brother George (Patricia)Colbert of Mesa, Arizona. He was the father of seven children: Aaristen, Michael, Phylicia, and Regina Colbert; Bianca Iverson, Raven and Becky Wessels and five grandchildren. He also leaves nieces, Sonya Spann of Davenport, Iowa, Vicki Downs of Mesa, Arizona; nephews Robert Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa, Darin Johnson of Kansas City, Missouri, Michael Downs of Mesa, Arizona and Brian Downs of Florence, Arizona, along with numerous great nephews and nieces. His sister Argolda Duff preceded him in death.
