Loran was born on August 11, 1944, in Sanford, Florida, the son of Loran H. Lain, Sr. and Evelyn M. (Melsha) Lain, while his father served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. The family returned home to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in 1947. Loran was employed for many years at Heabel’s Lumber Company, Clemen’s Canvas Mfg., and All Tri-R at ADM in Cedar Rapids. Following retirement, he continued to work for Per Mar Security at Menard’s and at the Linn Co. Social Services building. Loran's gentle nature, generous heart, and willingness to help anyone in need made a lasting impression on countless lives.

He found great joy in the outdoors, especially pheasant/duck hunting and fishing where he could enjoy God's creation and the peace of nature. Loran was also a talented craftsman whose skilled hands could build, repair, create, and fix just about anything. Loran achieved his third-degree black belt in Goju-Ryū Karate and enjoyed instructing youth in the karate program at the Ellis YMCA. He had a special love for animals and always had a favorite by his side, most often a dog, and in his final years, his treasured cat, Archie. Throughout his timeon earth, his faith in God was the foundation of his life, guiding his actions and shaping the example he set for his family. In earlier years, he loved working with his dear friends, Terry and Diane Miller, with the junior youth program at Edgewood Baptist Church.
