Lois L. Dennis, 72 of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at St. Luke's Hospital. Services will be 12 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be an hour prior to services. Lois was born May 24, 1938 in Milan, Tennessee, the daughter of Arnold and Mandy (Fitzgerald) Smith. Lois was a kind, wise and remarkable woman who raised five children on her own. She was a devoted mother, a beloved grandmother and great grandmother. Lois cherished people; she had a gift for listening, relating and responding to the needs of others. She taught grown-ups as well as children how to live life to the fullest, many of whom often claimed her as their own. She will be dearly missed by her family and many, many friends. Lois began her public service career at HACAP. She worked for the City of Cedar Rapids in various employment and job training positions, and retired from Kirkwood Community College. Her career spanned 32 years and her achievements are too numerous to list. Lois was a long time member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church and a member of Silver Leaf Chapter #5 OES. Lois is survived by daughters Beverly Dennis and Cynthia Dennis; sons Jerry Dennis, Jr. and Robert (Jackie) Dennis; a sister Betty Anderson; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jerry Dennis Sr., daughter Loretta in September 2010 as well as brothers, James Smith, James Hunt, Crockett Nunn; and her sisters Inez Hutchinson and Gaynelle Adams. Her family would like to thank Dr. Keong and the nurses in SICU at UIHC as well as the dedicated nurses and staff at the Continuing Care Hospital and Hospice at St. Luke's. Memorials may be directed to the family.
