Linda "Sarge" "Red" Payton, 66 of Cedar Rapids, died peacefully on Thursday, December 3, 2015 in her daughter's home in Monticello. A memorial gathering will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, December 7, 2015 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Full military rites will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel, followed by an extended time of celebration. Private family inurnment will be at a later date in Mt. Vernon Cemetery.
Linda was born June 2, 1949 in Virginia, the daughter of Orville and Opal (Strawder) Campbell. She graduated high school in Pontiac, Michigan. Sarge worked with the Local 89 Ironworkers for many years. She was a twenty-one year member of Army National Guard 234th Signal Battalion Company C in Cedar Rapids, until her retirement. Sarge enjoyed bowling, shooting pool, and spending time with her friends and family.
Sarge is survived by her children Dustin Ean of Kenosha, Wisconsin, Charnel Payton of Monticello, and Damon (Claudia) Payton of Ft. Collins, Colorado; grandchildren James, Richie, Thomas, Alexandria, Damon Jr., JuAnny, Angel, Zoriah, Nayeli; her siblings Terrie Hall of Trinity, North Carolina, Vivian (Wyatt) Broach of South Carolina, Barbara (Bobbie) Batts of North Carolina, David (Lynne) Tuel of Mechanicsville, and Kevin Campbell of Cedar Rapids; her step-mother Hazel Campbell of Marion; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Sarge was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Gary Lee Campbell.
