Lester H. Hodina, 88, died Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Higley Mansion from a brief illness. As per Lester's wishes, private family services will be held in Czech National Cemetery. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is assisting the family. A full obituary will be in Sunday's newspaper. Lester was born March 2, 1924 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Bohumil and Agnes (Morek) Hodina. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1941. During his time in high school, he was active in track and was the captain of the basketball team. Following high school, he enlisted in the United States Navy. While in the Navy he was involved in many invasion landing, including North Africa, Italy and France, and was awarded the Purple Heart. He worked for Cherry-Burrell as a machinist for many years until his retirement. Lester enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and slow-pitch softball. In later life he enjoyed going to the casino. Lester is survived by his son Tom Hodina of Waukon; brother Milo Hodina of Cedar Rapids; a sister Evelyn (Everett) Mack of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Lucille (Cliff) Netolicky of Cedar Rapids, as well as nieces and nephews, and a special companion Theresa Kindle of Cedar Rapids. Lester was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Mary Regan of Waukon.
