Leonard Ivan Zalesky, 85 of Shueyville, passed away peacefully at St. Luke's Hospice. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, November 12th at St. Ludmila's Catholic Church with Fr. Dennis Juhl presiding. Burial will follow at the Shueyville Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, November 11th from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. vigil. Leonard was born August 10, 1928 in rural Swisher, the son of Joseph and Hattie (Bys) Zalesky. Leonard served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He married the love of his life, Doris McDonnell on June 11, 1957 in Coggon. He worked for many years as a plumber for Swisher Plumbing. He was a longtime member of St. Ludmila's Catholic Church. He enjoyed fishing, mushrooming, gardening, playing cards, doing crossword puzzles, attending sporting events and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Leonard is survived by his children Cathy (John) Birch of Olathe, Kansas, Lennie (Maria) Zalesky of Riverside, California, Jim (Teri) Zalesky of Corvallis, Oregon, Larry (Laura) Zalesky of Cedar Rapids, Theresa (Jay) Koehn and Chris (Jim) Heick all of Solon, and Diane (Kevin) Berns of North Liberty; twenty grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind many good friends and neighbors, especially Wes, Michele & Anne Cerveny who he considered family. Leonard was preceded in death by his loving wife Doris, granddaughter, Alison Birch, his brother, Joe Zalesky and his sister, Leona Edwards. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family in Leonard's name. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Luke's Hospice who took such loving care of Leonard.
