Kayla Gilson, 69, of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on September 23, surrounded by her family while under the compassionate care of St. Luke's Hospital Hospice. Born on November 15, 1956, Kayla lived a life marked by strength, resilience, and an independent spirit. Kayla was known for her hard work, determination, sense of humor, and wisdom. She was a good listener and always just a phone call away, ready to offer guidance or lend a listening ear. She enjoyed mushroom hunting, had a special affection for horses, and loved animals. She especially adored her cat, Baby, and was preceded in death by her beloved dog, Gizmo.

Kayla's family includes her 3 children, Kristina McCann, Jeremy (Cindy) McCann, and Sara Jo Truitt (Chris); her sister, Cindy Stone; her brother-in-law, Charles Tabor; 12 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Dwight Howell and Goldie Fredericks Lankford; her sister, Vangie Ann (Howell) Tabor; and her brother and sister-in-law, Randy and Jennie Howell.

A Celebration of Life will be held on October 18, 2026, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at The Avacentre, 2121 Bowling St SW, Cedar Rapids, Iowa 52404.
