John William Phillips, 93 of Mesa, AZ, formerly of Solon, died Tuesday, November 6, 2007. Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at St. John Lutheran Church, Ely, with Rev. Jeff Borgwardt presiding. Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, at Cedar Memorial Cemetery where there will be military rites conducted by the Solon American Legion Stinocher Post 460.
John was born September 12, 1914 in Ely, Iowa, the son of Lester and Katie Brokel Phillips. John graduated from Ely High School in 1933. He married Martha Frances Krob on June 1, 1937. John proudly served his country in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946 during WWII. John was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Mesa, the Solon American Legion Stinocher Post 460 for 61 years, B.P.O.E in Mesa, I.O.O.F Lodge #581 in Ely, the Solon City Council, Solon Community School Board, and the Solon Fire Department for 23 years. John worked 40 years as the manager of F. J. Krob and Co. in Solon until his retirement in 1977. At that time John and Martha moved to Mesa.
John is survived by his wife Martha; his daughters Sandra (Mike) Albaugh of Visalia, CA and Carol (Dan) Scanlan of Grand Haven, MI; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter.
