Jean L. Smith, 71 of Ely, died Sunday, May 13, 2012 at St. Luke's Hospital. A Celebration of Jean's life and gathering will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 10, 2012 at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Jean was born December 10, 1940 in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Elmer and Margaret (Roit) Smith. Jean was valedictorian from the first graduating class Prairie High School in 1959. She earned a degree from Cedar Rapids Business College. Jean worked for thirty years at Merchants National Bank until her retirement. Jean was the heart and soul of Bures Electric and Heating until her death. Jean was a farm girl all her life and lived on the fourth generation family farm. The last twelve years were devoted to kolaches, beef and honey at local farmers markets. Jean is survived by her husband Ray Bures. Jean is also survived by her extended family and friends she met throughout her life. Jean was preceded in death by her parents Elmer and Margaret. Memorials may be directed the Ely Fire Department.
