James Matthew Macek, 76, of Cedar Rapids, died Wednesday, December 9, 2020 at the Dennis & Donna Oldorf Hospice House. Private Funeral Mass for Jim will be held at St. Ludmila's Catholic Church with Fr. Ken Glaser presiding. Burial will be in Czech National Cemetery. Public visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Thursday, December 17, 2020, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. The family requests that everyone attending to wear a mask and practice social distancing.
James was born February 20, 1944, in Cedar Rapids, the son of Matt and Mary (Jindrich) Macek. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Jefferson High School, class of 1962. Following, Jim attended and earned an Industrial Engineering Degree from the University of Iowa, in 1967. Jim was united in marriage to Nancy Moore on December 26, 1970, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Omaha, Nebraska. Jim worked at Fisher Controls from 1967-1973, and later joined his father at Reliable Machine. He was dedicated to his profession and was very active in the operations to this day. Jim was a long-time member of St. Ludmila's Catholic Church, where he was involved with the Kolache Festival, served on the church council. In addition, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus #5677, and serving on the board for the Cedar Rapids Prairie School Foundation.
Jim is survived by his wife, Nancy; children Brian (Kelly) Macek of Marion and Katherine (Chris) Rix of Elk Grove, California; four grandchildren Ava, Annabelle, Lilly and Connor; his sister Selma (Ray) Scheetz of Cedar Rapids; nephews Raphael (Anna) Scheetz and Kurt Scheetz; nieces Sybil Scheetz, Jamie (Darrell) Golden-Grove and Jessica Browne.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother and father-in-law Prudence and Gerald Moore, and a sister-in-law Pat Kinsell.
Memorials may be directed to either St. Ludmila's Catholic Church, Hospice of Mercy, or to the donor's choice of charity.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Hospice of Mercy, Hall-Perrine, Dr. Nabi, and Dr. Lee for their compassionate care for Jim and his family.
