James "Jim" Gene Horlivy Howell, 76 of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, January 19, 2015 at Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center. Celebration of Life services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Burial will follow in Anderson Cemetery near Swisher. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Brosh Chapel. James was born November 17, 1938 in Cedar Rapids, and was raised by his great uncle and aunt John and Kathryn Horlivy. He graduated from Wilson High School in 1957. Jim worked at Barnard Leas, Square D and for many years at Westside Sewing. Jim was united in marriage to Janice Maureen Benish on January 14, 1967 at First Presbyterian Church near Ely. He enjoyed working with wood and metals, playing the guitar and harmonica, photography and activities outdoors. James is survived by his wife, Janice; children Dan Howell of Cedar Rapids and Tammy Howell all of Cedar Rapids; cousins Gary VanCura, Mary Jane VanCura and Linda Kooreman; brother-in-laws Marlyn (Mickie) Benish of Springville and Darrell (Janet) Benish of Cedar Rapids; sister-in-law Janelle Benish of Cedar Rapids as well as his nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents William E. and Nellie (VanCura) Howell, his great uncle and aunt John and Kathryn Horlivy. Memorials may be directed to the family.
