Hassan
Kalell
August 6, 2018
Hassan "Hass" Kalell passed away at age 90 on August 6, 2018. Hassan was a loving husband, father, Juddy (Grandfather) and proud member of the United States Marine Corps. He was born on March 13, 1928 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to the late Albert and Emney Kalell and met his beloved wife, Margaret, in 1961. It was love at first sight and they went on to enjoy 56 years of marriage together. Hassan is survived by his wife, as well as son Alan (Lisa) Kalell of Los Angeles, daughter Susan Kalell of Chicago, grandson Jordan Kalell and granddaughter Lindsey Kalell, both of Denver, and grandpets KC, Barley and Baxter.
A true patriot, at 17 years old Hassan pleaded with his parents to grant permission to enlist in the military to fight for his country. He joined the United States Marine Corps and was stationed in China from 1945-1948 during World War II. Then, from 1950-1951, he served in the USMC 1st Division during the Korean War conflict, where he was awarded a Purple Heart and subsequently honorably discharged. His favorite expression was "Once a Marine, always a Marine."
He generously provided for his family by working for nearly 40 years as a switchman with Chicago and Northwestern Railway. Hassan is also survived by his sisters Salha Hahn, Fatima Olwan, and Mona Williams and is preceded in death by brothers Sine and Ahmed Kalell. He was a believer in philanthropy and was a life-long member of the Masonic Lodge, as well as the El Kahir Shrine, where he worked over the years to raise funds for the transportation of sick children.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the Shriners Hospital for Children or to the Islamic Center of Cedar Rapids.
Friends and family can pay their respects at the funeral service, officiated by Iman Hassan Selim, on 11:00AM Wednesday, July 8 at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre, located at 2121 Bowling St SW, Cedar Rapids.
