Georgena Vorel Havlena, of 2115 First Avenue SE, a Cedar Rapids resident since 1976, died on Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Cottage Grove Place following a brief illness.
Funeral Mass will be 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 17
th
at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Czech National Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, temporarily located at 3100 F Avenue NW.
Survivors include a brother, Donald Vorel (Esther), Cedar Rapids, nieces, Jean Berry of California, and Marie Emerson of Albuquerque, New Mexico, 2 nephews, Leonard Mouchka and David Unzeitig of Cedar Rapids, and several grand nieces and grand nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, her parents, and a sister, Elsie Wienands, three brothers, Elmer Vorel, Charles and William Vorel and a sister in law, Anna Unzeitig, 3 nieces, Georgina Mouchka, Marian Thompson, Marguerite Schlotterbeck, a nephew, Alan Vorel.
She was born in Fairfax the beloved daughter of Joseph and Anna Dvorak Vorel. She married Charles Havlena, June 12, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois. Prior to moving to Washington D. C. in 1930, she taught in the Swisher and Fairfax Elementery Schools. In Washington D.C. she was on the Secretarial staff of a United States Senator and later was Assistant Manager, Investment Building, from 1934-1976.
She was active in civic affairs in Washington D.C. Mrs. Havlena was a founding and charter member of the United States Capitol Historical Society, member of the Pan American Liason Committee and District of Columbia Salvation Army Auxillary. She served as President of Pilot Club of Washington D.C., as Pilot Internationals, Northeast/Potomac District Governor and in 1960 was elected the Pilot International President. In 1965, Mayor Walter Washington appointed her to the District of Columbia's representative and Charter secretary treasurer of the National Association of Women Highway Safety Leaders. From 1968 to 1976, she served as President of Women's League for Traffic Safety of Metropolitan Washington D.C. She was the recipient of many awards for her work in highway traffic safety. Mrs. Havlena was a member of the Awards Jury, Freedoms Foundation Valley Forge, PA.
Locally, she had been affiliated with the Cedar Rapids Womans Club, Irene Douglas Chapter of Kings Daughters and Sons, Mercy Medical Auxiliary, St. Lukes Auxiliary Guild, a Life Member Cedar Rapids Symphony Guild, Linn County History Center, Senior Bureau Chamber of Commerce, Friends of Public Library and St. Margarets Circle and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
