The Lord called George Merlin Smith, 94, home on Saturday February 9th, 2013 at St. Luke's Living Center East. Services will be 3 p.m. February 24, 2013, at Gospel Tabernacle Church. Visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is handling arrangements. Survivors include eight children, Sherry Leach of Cedar Rapids, Mark (Annadean), Kirk (Lisa) Arizona, Randy (Sue), Anthony of Minnesota, Georgeann, Robert (Diane) of Missouri and Crystal (Melvin) of Texas; 23 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; and nephew David (Joyce) Smith of New Haven, Missouri. He so loved dearly Cheryl, Matt, Kayle (Fernando) Naydelyn, Little George and the Kimpton family. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Rose Smith; brothers, Roy, Leo, Leon, and Joseph; and sisters, Hazel, Ruth, and Josephine. He was loved by a host of family and friends. In his early years he played in the American Negro Baseball League between 1931 - 1938. He was a boxer for many years as well as a true fan of football and baseball. George was employed many years with Missouri Transit and a private chauffeur for Mr. Fletcher and family. He later retired from St. Luke's Living Center East. George was well known for his one Swisher Sweet cigar and for friendly hauling service "Let George Do It." He truly loved and cared for so many people. A man full of wisdom, dignity, and pride, he will be greatly missed. A memorial fund has been set up directly to Brosh Chapel.
