George William McCord, 88 of Cedar Rapids, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 23, 2017 in his home. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 27, 2017 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, with burial to follow in St. John's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 2017 at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW.
George was born August 13, 1928 in Marshalltown, the son of George and Permelia (Heckle) McCord. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Wilson High School. George served in the Iowa National Guard from 1947-1949. He was united in marriage to Joan Jecmenek on August 1, 1950 at St. Ludmila's Catholic Church. Joan died on November 8, 2002. He was united in marriage to Shirley Emerson on October 25, 2003 at NCSML.
George started working at Collins Radio, then owned and operated A-1 Conoco for many years, and retired from Quaker Oats. He collected and sold model trains, enjoyed garage sales and thrift stores, coffee group with friends and spending time with his family. George was a member of various train collector clubs, and a charter member of Knights of Columbus Council.
George is survived by his wife Shirley; his children Cynthia (Dennis) Duda, Jenny (Steve) Murphy, Laurie Berdahl, Amy (Andy) Guerra, and Sarah (Rick) Long; step-sons Max (Lori) Emerson and Jim (Annie) Emerson; twenty grandchildren; twenty-five great-grandchildren; his sister Delores Holecek; and a brother-in-law Donnie Bolton.
He was preceded in death by his wife Joan McCord, his daughter Mollie McCord, three brothers Ted, Ron and John McCord, and his parents.
Memorials may be directed to either St. Wenceslaus or to Trinity Lutheran Church.
