George Carl Bortz, 96 of Solon, died Friday, June 16, 2017 at the Solon Nursing Care Center. Celebration of Life Services will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Solon, located at 100 South Cedar Street. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Solon. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, June 19, 2017 at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
George was born January 5, 1921 in Homestead, the son of Adam and Marie (Miller) Bortz. He married Loretta Lingel on August 10, 1949 in Cedar Rapids. He began working at the age of 15, at the Amana Society Farms, where he hand-milked cows, tended to hogs, installed fencing and picked corn. George and Loretta lived in the Solon area where they farmed for many years. He also worked for local farmers in his early years, Wilson Packing and was on a road construction crew for a few years. His passion was farming, as well he enjoyed playing cards, and being with his family.
George is survived by his daughter Nancy (Bob) Welsh of Williamsburg; seven grandchildren, Carl (Amy) Bortz-Clearfield, Utah; Katie (Garrett)Glenn-Lisbon; Becky (Dan) Wagley-Pensacola, Fl.; Lee (Katie) Bortz-Lisbon; Heidi (Taylor)Hopper-Ames; Bethany Welsh (Ryan Gorsch) Williamsburg; Neil Welsh- Williamsburg.; ten great-grandchildren, Morgan (Kyle)Roseberry-Cedar Rapids; Kasey Bortz, Cedar Rapids; Cameron Bortz -Tiffin; McKenna and Josie Nost, Brylee Glenn-Lisbon; Taylor and Tate Wagley-Pensacola,Fl.; Colton and Ryan Bortz -Tipton.; daughter-in-law Patti Schott of Lisbon; his brother Willard Bortz of Cedar Rapids; his brother-in-law Wilbur "Bud" Lingel, and special family members Malinda and David Poduska, and Ambrose Poduska of Lowden.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Loretta, son Gary Bortz and a sister Vernice (Walter) Fruendt, and his sisters-in-law Maxine Bortz and Doris Lingel.
Memorials may be directed to the Solon First Responders and or to Hospice of Iowa City.
