Gene R. Richter passed on peacefully at home on May 27, 2021. Per his wishes, a private Celebration of Life service will be held at a later date.  Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Solon is in charge of arrangements.

Gene was born to Herald and Zella (Dettbarn) Richter, along with his twin, on December 13, 1953. He was raised an Iowa farm boy in Earlville with his siblings Judy (Ed) Heilers, Jo (John) Heilers, Faye (Wayne) Meyers, John (Lynn) Richter, Joann (Collin) Proctor, and Diane (Jim) Stone. It was a hardy childhood that prepared him for the adventures that awaited him in adulthood.

He married his wife, Suzy, on June 7, 1975. Together they had a son, Adam and a daughter, Amy (Eddie) Kurcz. His in-law family includes Raymond and Marlene Jordan and Kevin (Penni) Jordan. As he would tell you he was the favorite uncle to his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Judy, and her daughter Cheri.

Gene lived a life responding to the needs of others. He reveled in the challenges of teaching something new every day, in seeing students discover new skills, and a feeling of success. He was able to remain invested all 36 years of his career due in part to the wonderful teachers, staff, and fellow coaches that he had the privilege to work with at Cedar Rapids Prairie, (College Community). The hours before and after classes that he spent coaching the student athletes in many sports brought him joy, as he witnessed their growth as humans from the lessons learned through sports. Most of all he loved his family. They are left to treasure the countless memories of his life as the husband, father, father-in-law, son-in-law, brother, and uncle.

While he had a rare cancer, he continued to live his life and not his disease.  In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be directed to ACPMP Research Foundation at acpmp.org
