Frank J. Simon, 96, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, March 31, 2011 at St. Luke's Hospital. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Burial will follow in Czech National Cemetery. Visitation will be from one hour prior to services Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids. Frank was born October 1, 1914 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Adolph and Anna Becicka Simon. He married Alma Benish on August 12, 1936 in Rock Island, Illinois. Frank held several jobs, from 1939 - 1941 he was a welder. He was a machinist at Collins before joining the Army Air Corp, where he served from 1942 - 1946. He was a flying instructor with the Air Corp for two and a half years. After the Air Corp, he was an auto mechanic and sold cars. In 1962, he became a security guard at Collins, retiring in 1976. For five years after retirement, he was an on-call security guard at Collins. While working his other jobs, he was also a flying instructor for 16 years. Frank was a member of the Swisher American Legion. Frank raced Midget dirt track and played trumpet in several bands in his early years. He enjoyed visiting with everyone, especially his nieces and nephews, and watching auto racing on TV. Frank is survived by his nephews Robert (Marilyn) Simon, Marlyn (Mickie) Benish, Darrell (Janet) Benish; nieces Janice (Jim) Howell, Janelle Benish; as well as numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alma, a sister Amelia Dostal and a brother John Simon. Memorials may be directed to Camp Courageous.
