Floyd David Smith, 81, of Swisher, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Celebration of life gathering will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW.  Military rites will be conducted at 4 p.m. March 10, 2026, at Brosh Chapel.  There will be a Memorial Team Roping event at his son's house in Solon at a later date.

Floyd was born on September 12, 1944, in Chariton, Iowa. the son of Gerald Hugh and Ethel Irene (Offenberger) Smith. Floyd graduated from Chariton High School, in 1963. Floyd had a passion for learning, he went to Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville, then earned his master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado. After graduation, Floyd enlisted in the United States Army in 1968. Upon his return he married Jeanine Burton, together they had three children and then later divorced. Floyd then went on to be a teacher at Eagle Valley High School in Eagle, Colorado and Prairie High School in Cedar Rapids. Not only was he the gym teacher, but he was also the football coach, the wrestling team coach, and the drivers ed. teacher all before retiring in 2003.

He leaves behind his three children Lisa (Russ) Smith-Hard of Van Horne, Troy Smith, of Cedar Rapids, and Cody (Alicia) Smith of Solon; grandchildren Dallas, Tucker (Maze), Jared, Jayce, Jaxson, Josie, Piper and Quincey; one great-grandchild on the way; his siblings Arlene Irving, and Ed (Marlene) Smith; brother-in-law Richard Carpenter, longtime companion Cindy Menefee; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Beth Carpenter and a brother-in-law Ken Irving.
