Floyd "Bill" Brecht, 93 died Tuesday, August 14, 2007 at the Solon Care Center after a lengthy illness. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 17, 2007 at St. Ludmila's Catholic Church in Cedar Rapids. Burial will be Friday, 1:30 p.m. in St. Mary's Cemetery in Solon, where there will be full military rights by the Solon American Legion Stinocher Post 460. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Brosh Chapel in Solon where there will be a 6 p.m. vigil. Visitation will also be an hour prior to Mass at the church.
Floyd was born July 7, 1914, the son of Leonard and Bertha (Schmuecker) Brecht. He married Mary Kelly on August 4, 1934 in Ottumwa. Bill proudly served his country during WWII. He was an active member in the American Legion Post 460 for over 50 years. He was also a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters for over 75 years, the Knights of Columbus, and St. Lumila's Catholic Church. Bill farmed for many years also he owned and operated Brecht's Restaurant and Tavern, Watkins Grocery, and the Safari Lounge. He sold real estate for Joe Ulch Realty, and sold cars for Langhurst Motor. He enjoyed playing cards, fishing, hunting, dancing as well as wintering in the Mesa, Arizona area with friends for over 20 years.
Bill is survived by his wife Mary; daughters: Rosemary (Gene) Erenberger of Solon, Phyllis (Bernie) White of Solon, Cheryl (Don) Williams of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren: Joni (Don) Herdliska, Gail (Randy) Tyler, Mike (Kathy) Erenberger, David (Susan) Erenberger, Dan (Mary) Erenberger, Glen (Cindy) Erenberger, Debra (Dennis) Erenberger, Kevin White, Jennifer (Craig) Armour, Spencer (Andrea) Williams, and Nick (Renee) Williams; 30 greatgrandchildren; 1 greatgreat grandchild; sisters: Kathryn Kimm of Norway, and Evelyn Kimm of Norway; and brothers Bernard (Marion) Brecht, and Edwin (Eileen) Brecht all of Marengo.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; grandson Steven White, greatgrandson Willy Herdliska; and his brother Leonard Brecht.
