Everett C. Spidle, 80 of Ely, died Tuesday, July 8, 2008 at Mercy Medical Center following a brief illness.  Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, July 11, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Solon, with the Rev. Jeff Borgwardt presiding.  Burial will follow in Cedar Memorial Cemetery, Cedar Rapids.  Visitation will be Thursday, July 10, 2008 at Brosh Chapel in Solon from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.  Brosh Chapel in Solon is in charge of arrangements.
Everett was born on June 1, 1928 in Cedar County near Mechanicsville, the son of Chester and Bertha Craig Spidle.  He married Lorraine A. Adams on February 6, 1948 at The First Lutheran Church, Cedar Rapids.  They went on to raise five children and have lived at their current address for almost 46 years.
Everett farmed for six years and retired from Greyhound Lines after 30 years.  He also did roofing for 45 years.  Everett proudly served 41 years on the Ely Fire Department, was a 50 year member of the Ely Odd Fellow Lodge and member of the Ely Town and Country Club.
His hobbies included collecting fire memorabilia, bowling, gardening, his fish pond, his 1932 Ford Model A fire truck, golfing, attending State Fire Convention and making wine which he loved sharing with family and friends.  He also enjoyed Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball games and his Wednesday morning breakfast group.
Everett and Lorraine spent 21 winters in Donna, Texas where they and many friends enjoyed dancing, shuffleboard, playing cards and trips to Mexico.
Everett is survived by his wife of 60 years Lorraine, sons Duane (Susan) Spidle, Douglas (Sandra) Spidle, Kevin Spidle and Scott (Kay) Spidle; daughter Sheryl (Gary) Schulte; grandchildren Kimberly Schulte (fiancé Francisco Martinez), Chad (Michelle) Schulte, Roy (Kathy) Spidle and Brian Kessler; great-grandchildren Cory Schulte and Chenoa Kessler.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Willard Arthur Spidle and Orville Spidle; Sisters Velma Beaver and Vesta Spidle; brother-in-law Elbert Beaver; sister-in-law Vivian Spidle and two infant grandchildren and one infant great-grandchild.
Everett truly enjoyed his family including a very special niece, Connie Throckmorton.
Everett will be dearly missed by many friends and family that were touched by his life.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
