Eloise Metz, 83, of Norway and formerly of Russell, died Wednesday July 26, 2006, in Windmill Manor, Coralville, after a lengthy illness. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 31st at Brosh Chapel in Solon. Burial will follow in Oakland Cemetery in Solon. Friends may call after 9:00 a.m. Monday at the chapel. A luncheon will be served at Brosh Chapel and Community Center following the burial.
Dorothy Eloise Johnston was born May 17, 1923, in Kalona, the daughter of Dorothy (Adams) and Forrest Wiley Johnston. She attended schools in Birmingham and Brighton and was valedictorian of her graduating class at Brighton. She graduated with distinction with a BA degree in home economics from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant in 1944 and taught in schools in north central and northwest Iowa until her marriage.
She was united in marriage with Clarence R. Metz on December 24, 1953, in Grundy Center. She and Clarence farmed near Russell in Lucas County for over 30 years, and Eloise resumed her teaching career at Russell Community School, retiring in the early 1980's. She and Clarence sold their farm and moved to Norway in 1989 to be closer to family. Clarence died in 1994.
Eloise was a Zeta Tau Alpha alumna, a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the American Legion Auxiliary, the United Methodist Churches of Russell and Norway, and a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Business and Professional Women of Lucas County.
Eloise is survived by her children: Dorothy Metz of Tiffin, Forrest Metz of Victorville, California, and Liz Klimes of Tiffin; her daughter-in-law Andrea Metz of Victorville and former sons-in-law Don Stephens and Steve Klimes, both of Tiffin; her 12 grandchildren: Matt Stephens of Provo, Utah, Leah Stephens and fiance DJ Willis of Marion, Andrew and Clare Stephens of Tiffin, Zachary and Nathaniel Metz of Victorville, Bryan Branscomb and fiancee Shannon Eck of Norway, Tyson Branscomb and friend Jessi Lorrence of Amana, Kylan, Nicole, Natalie and Emily Klimes, all of Tiffin, her great-grandson, Davin Willis of Marion, and her nephew, Dean Schultz and wife Kay of Grundy Center. She was preceded into death by her parents, her husband Clarence, and her sister Virginia Schultz.
