Solon --Edward John Smith, 84, of Eustis , Fla. , formerly of Burlington , passed away at 9:22 p.m. Sunday, July 24, 2005 , in West Point Care Center , West Point .

Ruby Lois Smith, 79, of Eustis , Fla. , formerly of Burlington , passed away at 10:15 p.m. Sunday, July 24, 2005 , at her daughter's home in Fort Madison .

A joint memorial service for Edward and Ruby Smith will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 30, at Community of Christ Church in Hiawatha, with Pastor David Loy officiating. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the church. Inurnment: 2 p.m. Saturday, Oakland Cemetery , Solon.

Edward was born Dec. 28, 1920 , in Solon, the son of John D. and Lucille V. Cavanaugh Smith. He worked as a security guard at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for many years.
Edward was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the European Theater. Ruby was born January 17, 1926 , in Solon, the daughter of Levi and Anna King Pennington. She was a supervisor for TRW in West Burlington .
Edward and Ruby were married Aug. 29, 1941 , in Palmyra , Missouri . They were members of Community of Christ Church in Hiawatha. During retirement they both worked as fee keepers at the campgrounds at Coralville Lake .

Survivors include two daughters, Geneva (Larry) Fullenkamp of West Point and Sandra (David) Behne of Fort Madison; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Edward is also survived by a sister, Virginia Pennington of Alburnett; and a brother, Richard Smith of Danville .

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Ruby is also survived by a brother, Joseph Pennington of Alburnett.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and seven brothers.

A memorial has been established for Lee County Hospice or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
