Douglas Frank Zangerle, 80, of Solon, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was taken from us by complications of Sezary Syndrome.  Memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, December 31, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon.  Inurnment will be in St. Mary Cemetery, where full military rites will be conducted by the Solon American Legion.  Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, December 30, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church.  Visitation will also be one hour prior to services Monday at the church.  Brosh Chapel and The Avacentre in Solon are in charge of Doug's arrangements.

Doug was born March 17, 1938 to Frank and Ellen (Mulvihill) Zangerle in a box car on a farm in the Hopkinton and Delhi area.  He was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Monticello.  Following he enlisted in the Army where he served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne.  He was united in marriage to Colleen Burke in 1966 and he continued to dance with her up until 3 weeks before the end of his life.  Aside from dancing he loved horseback riding and calf roping, along with many other sports.  He treasured time spent with his six grandchildren. He was a loving and teaching grandpa, even starting Camp Zangerle in the summers for them all.  He lived a happy life until the end, traveling to Rome in October.  He owned a Masonry business for 30 years, and taught many young men the art of bricklaying.


Doug is survived by his wife Colleen; children Eric (Jane) Zangerle and Amy Zangerle; six grandchildren, Jordon 28, Devon 26, Jacey 21, Jack 20, Ted 18 and Braedon 17; his five siblings, Sandy (Tom) Dupler, Virginia Forest, Joyce Keeley, Herschel (Shelley) Zangerle and Greydon (Kris) Zangerle; as well as his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his infant daughter Lavina, his parents; his brother Kenneth (Maxine) Zangerle; his sister Judith Gugliemetti, and brother-in-law Lynn Forest.

Memorials may be directed to either the Ronald McDonald House, 850 2 nd Street SW in Rochester, Minnesota, 55902, Iowa City Hospice or to the new Solon Fire House campaign.
