Douglas Jay Hruby, 57 of Lincoln, Nebraska, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died recently in his home. Graveside services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Czech National Cemetery. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is in charge of arrangements. Doug was born December 31, 1955 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Don and Gladys (Chaloupka) Hruby. He graduated from Cedar Rapids Prairie High School in 1974. He earned an associate's degree at Kirkwood Community College and worked for many years in wastewater treatment and other positions in Iowa, Missouri, Kansas and Nebraska. Doug returned to school and achieved his bachelor of arts degree in history with honors at age 41 from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1998. He continued with graduate studies for several years, becoming quite knowledgeable about the Missouri River. Most recently, he worked for Teledyne Isco in Lincoln. Doug particularly enjoyed the companionship of several cats over the years and collected, repaired, and sold clocks as a hobby. Doug is survived by his parents, Don and Gladys of Cedar Rapids; a brother, Bruce (Stacy) Hruby of Oconomowoc, Wisconsin; and three nephews, Dustin, Alex and Peter Hruby. He was preceded in death by his grandparents. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Czech National Cemetery in Cedar Rapids in Doug's name.
