Dorothy Voparil, 74, of Solon, died Saturday, May 27, 2006 in her home after a brief battle with cancer, surrounded by her family. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Solon with Father Wilkening and Father Benda presiding. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
Dorothy was born October 11, 1931 near Cedar Bluffs, the daughter of Robert and Martha (Malok) Maher. She married Richard Voparil January 30, 1954 in Tipton. She farmed along side of her husband, and worked for the Johnson County Senior Center for 23 years. Dorothy was an avid Iowa basketball fan and enjoyed just about any kind of local high school sport. She would either watch them on T.V. or listen to them on the radio. She was actively involved in "Friends of St. Bridgets Church," a group of neighbors who formed together to save their country church from being destroyed. Dorothy always put others before herself. The family would like to give special thanks to the Iowa City Hospice: Bruce, Diane, Paula, and Lori, who if not for them, we could have never kept mom at home.
Dorothy is survived by her husband, Richard; a son Kurtis J. (Sharon) Voparil of Solon; three daughters Susan (Randy) Hockom of Carroll, Debra (Joe) Ryan of Solon, and Lori (Joe) Sedlacek of Ely; seven grandchildren Annie, Chris, Chuck, Alex, Tiffany, Jade, and Michael; a greatgrandchild Alayna; a sister Linda Paulson of Carroll; and two brothers Pat Maher of West Branch, and Don Maher of Tipton.
Dorothy was preceded into death by her parents; and a brother Robert Maher.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be directed to the Friends of St. Bridgets Church or to the Iowa City Hospice in her memory.
