Obituary

Listen to Obituary
She was born, October 30, 1918, in Teedee, Montana, the daughter of Arthur Joshua Snouffer and Esther Henrietta Jensen. She died November 15, 2011, still in her own home of 60 years, as she wished. Dorothy married 2nd Lt George A. Hannon on June 19, 1943. A graduate of University of Iowa, class of 1940, she taught and inspired generations of students in Marion High School and Franklin Jr High. Loved intensely by her four daughters, Mary Theresa Hannon Beaty (and Richard), Margaret Easter Hannon, Barbara Jane Hannon, Deborah Anne Hannon Monserud (and Randy), her grandchildren, Taran Beaty (and Anita), Maev Beaty (and Alan), Molly Monserud, Richard Monserud, Steven Monserud (and Amy), and great-grandchildren Aidan and Piper Beaty, and also by her countless friends, new and old. We thank her for teaching all us to love compassionately, to think critically, to celebrate each other, and to listen to each other, and tell each other's stories. Then that too. Dorothy wants us to share a poem by Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) When I am dead, my dearest, Sing no sad songs for me; Plant thou no roses at my head, Nor shady cypress tree: Be the green grass above me With showers and dewdrops wet; And if thou wilt, remember, And if thou wilt, forget. I shall not see the shadows, I shall not feel the rain; I shall not hear the nightingale Sing on, as if in pain: And dreaming through the twilight That doth not rise nor set, Haply I may remember, And haply may forget. In her honour, her daughters invite friends and family to "Dorothy's Wake and Cookie Party" at her house, on Saturday November 19th from 5-8pm. Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, Dorothy asked for any donations in her honour to be sent to the MS Society of Linn County, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and Waypoint.
