Donald "Don" E. Vorel, 93, of Cedar Rapids, passed away Saturday, September 30, 2017 at Living Center West in Cedar Rapids following a short illness. Celebration of Life Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at Brosh Chapel in Cedar Rapids, located at 2121 Bowling Street SW. Burial will follow at Czech National Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday after 1 p.m. until service time.
Donald Edward was born July 13, 1924 in Fairfax, the son of Joseph and Anna Marie (Dvorak) Vorel. Don graduated from Roosevelt High School and attended Cedar Rapids Business College. He served his country in the US Navy from 1945 to 1946. He married Esther June Spryncl on June 25, 1948 in Cedar Rapids. He worked in accounting and administration for Mutual Fire and Automobile Company for 39 years, retiring in 1988. Don was a member of Lodge 13 WFLA and the National Czech and Slovak Museum. He also ministered to prisoners at Anamosa and Ft. Madison for many years, and attended Cedar Valley Bible Church. They enjoyed travelling throughout all 50 states, Europe, the Middle East, and the Orient. He and Esther especially enjoyed travel in the Holy Lands. Don volunteered with Esther at St. Luke's and Mercy Hospitals, as well as nature centers.
Don is survived by Esther, his wife of 69 years, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his parents and five siblings.
Memorials may be directed to National Czech and Slovak Museum.
